Welcome to the site
On this site there are songs and music released by Dave Upton songwriter as well as (mainly through the 'about writing' button), many songwriter resources - such as writing approaches, dealing with writers' block, info about the development of recording technologies, prosody, my writing approaches and so on.
The 'Releases' button will take you to several pages of songs and music released by Dave - Releases2 and Releasses3 and so on. Below this section are the last four pieces released by Dave, along with some writer's picks and a couple of remixed songs.
It's fair to say that I have never claimed to be a singer. However, producing demos means that I have to do my best to get over the song I'm trying to pitch. It's not always possible to get a good singer to record stuff, so I have to do it myself. So, please forgive my vocals!
In creating this site, I wanted to do more than just present the songs and music that I've written. I wanted to start a resource for people who write songs themselves. At the moment, most of this material is accessible through the 'About writing' button at the top of this page. Here you can find posts on writer's block, prosody, writing for other performers, my writing method, using a phone and notebook as a songwriter, Journalling, collaboration and so on. Over time, I hope to expand this section.
Similarly, the section on music production currently only covers a potted history of how my experience of music production has changed over the last fifty or so years. I hope to expand this to cover some tips about how I go about producing songs and some ideas for how to make productions more effective and fun.
Latest releases
In most cases, anything Dave has written recently (Usually the last month or so) will be shown here, under this latest releases banner. However, particularly in the case of music and or songs that have been placed for sync in film or TV, the production company may ask for exclusive rights for a particular length of time. In that case, the piece can't be shown here for contractual reasons. Once the sync period is over, the recording will be found under ''Releases' - just click the picture or the button to chase 'em down. All music and songs released recently can be found here unless they're 'sync-tied'.
